my "plane gang", "whitewashed", and gigantic blessings

Bonjour mes amis et ma famille!

I hope all of you are doing fantastic, that your bad days turn into good ones and your good ones turn into life-changing events! These past two weeks have been quite the adventure.

Where do I begin? The night before I left for the mission, I was able to play basketball with my friends one last time! The games were fun and the memories that followed are forever inscribed into my heart. The next day my mom and I woke up super early to get to the airport. I said goodbye to my brother and sisters, which was super hard, but it was time to go. The ride to the airport felt like I was Indiana Jones: about to embark on my next grand adventure!! My mom and I got to the airport and checked all my bags in. I looked to my left and saw the Polu family. Elder Polu was leaving for his mission that morning too. He was headed to Anchorage Alaska. Me and him both tore our ACLs our senior year and grew close during that experience, which turned out to be a blessing of that trial. We took some pictures, hung out, and then I was off. I saw another Elder who seemed nervous, so I got to talking with him. He mentioned an Elder that had missed his flight. Then came walking in Elder Polu. He was "that Elder"! What probably seemed like a mistake at first was turned into a grand blessing. We were able to talk the whole time on the plane with the flight attendant; some missionary work before we even got into the field, ha-ha.

I had a three-hour layover in Phoenix, so I hung out with Elder Polu before he had to leave. We sat across from a woman with the most adorable puppy ever. She also had the greatest job ever. She is a puppy deliverer. Talk about a sweet lifestyle. We learned she was a recent convert. We got to talking with some other people around us too. Those were some good times. Elder Polu and the puppy dog deliverer then left for Seattle and I headed back to my own terminal where I met my "plane gang".  There were about ten of us going to Independence. We talked about everything and we were all super excited. The plane ride was fun because I sat by three other Elders and Sisters. We had a good conversation about what was going to happen and whatnot.

We then arrived and got picked up from the airport. I nearly left one of my suitcases, but I was prompted by the Spirit to go check the baggage claim again. What a blessing. I got all my stuff and I think my mom's heart rested a little easier.

We then went to the Liberty temple, which was beautiful. Each of us got to take a picture with President and sister Ames. After the temple, we ate some food and did some paperwork at the stake center, which surprisingly I was prepared for! We then got assigned to our trainers. My trainer is Elder Hawkins: a great, funny Elder, who is kind of nerdy and athletic like me. The real miracle is that he speaks French so I will be able to keep up my language studies! We then went to Lee's Summit apartment, which was kind of shoddy, but you know, what do you expect. We spent the night and then left the next morning to go drop off Elder Hawkins' previous companion. Little did we know; however, that we would be moving too. On my first full day in the mission, we got "whitewashed" and moved unexpectedly to a new area. So, after Elder Hawkins said his goodbyes we went back to the apartment, packed up, and moved to Liberty Missouri. Thankfully, I had not unpacked too much of my stuff, but I felt bad for Elder Hawkins who did not have any idea we were going to be moving so he was not packed at all!

We are sharing the Liberty ward with Elder Wood and Elder Owens! We've had a blast getting to know the ward and some hard times too as we have been striving to be like Christ in our ministering efforts!

Some huge, gigantic blessings have been the Pyne, Campbell, and Newry families! The Pyne's are super funny and down to earth people! They cook up some great food and some great jokes! The Campbell’s are awesome!  Brother Campbell is a super-strong convert who helps us a lot with missionary work! Sister Campbell is like a mama bear and she is fun to talk to! We go boxing with Brother Campbell on P-days and he doesn't go too easy on us, which I love. He is a sayings machine! My favorite is "I won't give up, let up or shut up till I'm taken up. In fact, I'm just getting warmed up!" They are some fantastic people and even better friends.

The Newry's are special to me. I met them on my first day in Liberty and I have loved them ever since. They have fallen on hard times. I had the special and sacred opportunity to give Sister Newry a priesthood blessing. I remember distinctly saying "By your faith in Christ you will be made whole. As you strive to gain Jesus Christ's attributes you will be blessed both temporarily but especially spiritually." After that blessing Brother Newry got a job, Sister Newry started to feel better, and they were able to move into a bigger apartment. I think the same applies to everyone. As we have faith in Christ our love for Him is shown by our works. We strive to repent--to become better. We repent becoming like Him, which is perfect. Perfection is becoming as complete as God is. Thus "by thy faith ye are whole" is so much deeper. I know that as we strive to become like Christ because we love God and others with all our hearts, might, minds, souls, and strengths: we will become whole. We will become even as Jesus Christ became like Heavenly Father. Because of Him, we can achieve our ultimate purpose of returning to our loving Heavenly Father and being like Him.

Till next time, know that you have all my love.

A bientot et Au revoir!

October 14, 2020 - and so it begins!

Elder Polu and Elder Habel spent their senior year season of football together on the sidelines both with ACL injuries. What a delight to see that Elder Polu had missed his early morning flight and would fly from St. George, UT to Pheonix, AZ with Elder Habel.

Elder Habel is ready to go, excited to serve, and willing to give it his all.

This stellar group of brand new missionaries flew together from Pheonix, AZ to Kansas City, MO. All green and ready to go.

The first stop once arriving in Kansas City was to visit the Temple and get a quick pic with President and sister Ames. This picture was confirmation that Caleb had arrived safely.

Bonjour mes amis et ma famille!

Bonjour mes amis et ma famille!

I hope all of you are doing well during these chaotic times. I hope you know how much the Lord loves each one of you!! He is our "light in the wilderness" and if we look unto Him, He is "mighty to save".

The fact that this week is already over astounds me! Time really does fly and at supersonic speeds. I am still dumbfounded; I have just gotten done with six weeks of the online MTC. This last week with my très bon amis has been filled with spiritual edification. I have been strengthened by my teachers Soeur Corrigan and Frere Sebra and I have been inspired by my fellow missionaries! Each one of their testimonies is unique and full of faith filled love for our Savior Jesus Christ. They give me a great desire to be the best missionary and the best person I can be for those I love, which includes all of you reading this ;)!

Something I have realized as I go into the mission field is I feel my happiest, I feel most content with myself, as I serve others out of love and as I am guided by the Holy Ghost. I feel satisfied in my soul as I sincerely listen to others. I feel pure joy as I make others' days better by reaching out and being myself. When we love, we listen. When we love, we are kind. When we love we are willing to lay down our own will for the eternal happiness of others. We perform kind acts that will help each child of God draw nearer to our/their Father in Heaven.

As I go out into the field, I am reminded of these profound utterances from our Lord...

John 15:9-14

"9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you."

John 13:34-35

"34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."

I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I love Him. I love to keep His commandments. I love the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. I love His tender mercies of restoring what once was lost through His prophet Joseph Smith. I love the prophet President Russel M. Nelson and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. I love the covenants and the ordinances of the restored Gospel. I love the teachings of Christ. I love all of you. Most importantly I love Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.

I hope to love throughout my whole life with all my heart, with all my soul, with all my strength, and with all my mind. I hope all of you reading this will believe and come to cherish that God is your Heavenly Father. I hope all of you will believe and love that He loved you so much that Jesus Christ willingly came to Earth to suffer for all the hardships of life through His miraculous Atonement. Know that you are never too far gone for His loving reach. Know that there is no wrong that cannot be righted through Him. Know that you are truly a child of Heavenly Father and that you have all the potential to become as He is.

All my love and until next time: Au revoir et à bientôt!

Love, Elder Habel

Bonjour mes amis et me famille! Je esperant que vous allez bien!

Bonjour mes amis et me famille! Je esperant que vous allez bien! I hope that you are doing well! I pray that all of you find the love our Heavenly Father has for you in your life! I pray that good luck will grace all you do and that innumerable blessings will follow all your good deeds!

I can't believe I am beginning my last week of the MTC. To each of my district members (Soeur Storms, Soeur Teisina, Soeur Hales, Soeur Jones, Soeur Konold, Elder Pabst, Elder Bohman, Elder Anderson, Elder Hansen, and Elder Winward) know that when you read this that I will miss each of you with all of my heart! Each of you has inspired me with your brilliant testimonies and knowledge. Each of you, at one point in time have inspired me when I was feeling low: whether it be from your tearful testimonies, your heartfelt jokes, your soulful smiles or just a pleasant conversation. Each of you have touched my life, my very soul, very deeply. I can't wait to make this last week in the MTC the best one yet with each of you.

I had a very tender experience this week. Before my little sister Josie went in for surgery, I had the sacred and humbling opportunity to give her a priesthood blessing. My grandpa can attest that I was nervous, and my brother can tell you it was not perfect but the Spirit we felt was so special. As I called upon Heavenly Father to help me, the Holy Ghost loosened my tongue. The words I spoke were not my own but His. I bear my solemn witness that the power of the Priesthood is real. I know the Priesthood is the power of God, given to man by God, to serve His children. I can bear testimony if we have faith in Jesus Christ, He will answer our heartfelt pleadings, and tearful petitions. This experience made me truly have faith in Him. As soon as I heard Josie was alright and that the surgery went well, beyond what the surgeon had expected, I felt the love of the Lord. The tears streamed to my eyes as I felt in my burning heart the impression of the Lord's love for my sister Josie and for my family. He suffered the path before her already. Through Him all will be made well. I felt His love for me; His mercy and wisdom for letting me be a part of that sacred blessing. I am so happy to know that the Savior is willing to let me, a little 18-year-old elder, be His instrument in loving and healing those that He loves infinitely. I am also thankful for modern medicine! What a great day and age we live in!

I was graced again with another sacred and humbling opportunity to grow spiritually this week. Me and my companion, Elder Winward, taught our francais ami, Dorothee. We tried something new that day when we went to teach her. We followed where the Spirit led, ask questions when we felt prompted, and minister to Dorothee instead of trying to preach. I give all the credit to my companion Elder Winward. I am a worrier. He softened my heart and calmed my fears about silences and pauses. The lesson we were able to teach, the truths we were able to testify of; all came to be because we followed the Spirit. We shared scriptures and bore testimony of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For He is mighty to save and loves each of us infinitely. We testified that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Christ. We shared scriptures that showed His hand in the Book of Mormon. Overall, the experience changed me because now I don't think two years will be enough time. The joy I felt from seeing our ami feeling joy and peace was indescribable. I want to be like our Savior Jesus Christ.

I also had the chance to watch General Conference with my family. May we take the messages we hear and apply them to our lives. Treat others with respect and love, foster unity in our families and communities, rely on the Savior through these tough times. Pray to Heavenly Father: He will hear you. He will answer you.

As always, know that I love you, know that Heavenly Father loves you, know that Jesus Christ loves you, know that the Holy Ghost loves you. know that you are loved; no matter what.

Keep the commandments of God.

Remember the two greatest commandments.

Live love.

Till next time, a bientôt et au revoir!

Love, Elder Habel
